Brick Lane magic

Do you ever feel overwhelmed when walking into food markets? There are just so many options you can’t decide which one is worth your while. We went along to Brick Lane food market and weaned out the drab, and flavourless so you wouldn’t have to.

Now with dozens of food stalls crammed together under one roof, featuring recipes from all across the globe it was going to be a challenge until we realised that free samples are the staple of the market. Left right and centre you’re getting toothpicks thrown at you, fried chicken, gnocchi balls, pulled pork, a noodle! The vendors will put just about anything on those sticks. We let the free samples lead the way to three magical meals.

Magical meal number one, gnocchi.

Stumbling upon a stall tucked away in the centre of the madness called ‘Homemade passion’, where they create their gnocchi and pasta from scratch and with “passion”.

There are two gnocchi sauces on offer: fresh basil pesto and gorgonzola cheese, and if you can’t decide what one you want, go for both (you can mix and match). The good thing about gnocchi is they can take any sauce tossed its way so both make beautiful accompaniments, but if you’re looking for something to cut through the thick, fluffy dumplings then I suggest the basil pesto.

Magical meal number two, fried chicken.

Surprisingly enough this stall, Maki Mayo, doesn’t offer samples but I suppose with queues up to 20 minutes long they don’t really need to.

Even with seven different types of fried chicken sauces, there is a clear winner, the Gangnam style - the sweet yet salty balance awakens your senses and the kick of heat keeps salivating for more. Rachel, staff member from Rosa’s Thai swears by Maki Mayo’s fried Gangnam chicken, “After trying every fried chicken stall, Maki Mayo’s Gangnam is by far the best, I come every day and they know my order by heart.”

If any of the other sauces they offer tickle your fancy but still want to try the Gangnam then you can choose their large menu size for £7 and pick two different styles.

Magical meal number three, Pad Thai.

I’m a sucker for a good Pad Thai and this stall didn’t leave me disappointed, I was hooked the moment they shoved that noodle on a toothpick at my face.

The ‘Pad Thai Stall’, original I know, offers a wide range of ingredients that you can add to your noodles. Vegan? They’ve got you covered with a delicious tofu addition. While the meal isn’t deemed ‘instagramable’ what with a big scrambled-fried egg laid on the top of the noodles like a blanket, its succulent chicken cooked to perfection tops any other Pad Thai I’ve had in a long while.

Their Pad Thai ranges from £6.50 to £8 depending on what ingredients you choose, no matter what you pick you will not be disappointed. Unless you hate peanuts, then steer clear. You can always ask the chefs not to add peanuts, they are willing to accommodate.

With so much food on offer make sure you turn up to Brick Lane on an empty stomach, all the delicious food and free samples on offer you can't help but overindulge.
